If you’re having some friends over or throwing a party cupcakes are a great choice for something sweet! There is such a variety in flavours and what you can do with the icing and decorations, they can go with absolutely any theme.
One of the simplest way to flavour your cupcakes is to simply by the flavour of cake that you would like and just pour it into cupcake tins instead of a cake pan. If you’d like to flavour your own cupcakes, here is a list of some of the most popular ones. Some popular DIY flavours are vanilla, chocolate, lemon, peanut butter, and coffee. You can always start with vanilla, and add various flavour extracts as well.
This is the best part of cupcakes in my opinion, you can get really creative with this. Icing can be dyed with food coloring to any shade imaginable, and there are so many decorative options like sprinkles, candies, fruit, and fondant. Fondant can be a little intimidating at first, but once you master it you can do so many intricate designs with it! Here is a good recipe for fondant, and here a video showing you how to ice the cupcakes with it:
Of course you can always use some of the more traditional methods of icing a cupcake with a spatula or piping bag. Some things people often use to decorate them include sprinkles, Smarties or M&Ms, crystallized sugar, fruit leather, marshmallows, licorice, wafers, and more. You can use melted chocolate to write on the cupcakes (make sure it’s not too hot or it will just melt your frosting), or you can write or draw designs on a parchment paper on a cookie sheet and put it in the freezer. Once the chocolate has cooled and is hard you can peel it (carefully!) from the parchment paper and plunk it down on top of your cupcakes.
